Soda Blasting & Fire Restoration in the Bay Area

Controlled surface cleaning for smoke, soot, char, fire residue, coatings, and related contamination on suitable structural wood and masonry.

PDB Inc. is a licensed commercial abrasive blasting contractor serving Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose and greater Bay Area project teams. We select soda or another appropriate abrasive media to suit the substrate, condition, and restoration objective.

Surface cleaning within the restoration scope

Prepare the retained surfaces.
Support the work that follows.

Fire restoration blasting can remove appropriate surface deposits and prepare accessible substrates for the next restoration phase. PDB coordinates the blasting scope with general contractors, restoration professionals, facility teams, and the trades responsible for repair or finishing.

Smoke, Soot & Fire Residue

Controlled cleaning of compatible surfaces affected by smoke deposits and fire-related contamination. Residue type, depth, and substrate condition guide the approach.

Char Removal from Wood

Evaluate light char and affected surface fibers on wood designated for retention. Cleaning does not restore lost structural capacity or establish that a fire-damaged member is sound.

Restoration Preparation

Prepare the agreed surfaces for inspection and subsequent restoration work. Define the desired finish and any requirements of the follow-on coating or treatment before production.

Suitable substrates & applications

Exposed framing.
Compatible masonry.

Structural Wood Restoration

Exposed beams, joists, decking, posts, and framing in commercial buildings. Wood species, grain, previous finishes, heat damage, and moisture conditions affect cleaning behavior and the resulting texture.

Masonry Surface Cleaning

Selected smoke- and soot-affected brick, CMU, and masonry surfaces where conditions permit. Evaluate the masonry face, mortar joints, porosity, previous treatments, and desired appearance before selecting a process.

Members or surfaces requiring structural evaluation, repair, or replacement should be identified by the responsible project professionals before the blasting scope is approved.

Controlled media & pressure selection

Soda is an option.
The surface determines the process.

Soda blasting uses sodium bicarbonate abrasive media and can offer gentler surface cleaning on suitable substrates where minimizing surface damage is important. Customers may describe the work as sandblasting; the actual media and technique are selected for the surface. It may be appropriate for certain fire-damage surface-cleaning applications, but another media or preparation method may better suit the project.

Evaluate the Condition

Review substrate hardness and integrity, contamination, coatings, char depth, access, and the restoration objective. Heavily damaged materials may require a different scope.

Control the Technique

Select media, pressure, nozzle distance, and technique around the retained substrate and accepted finish. Aggressive cleaning can erode softer wood, raise grain, or damage vulnerable masonry.

A representative test area or mockup can confirm cleaning response, surface texture, and acceptable appearance. One setting or sample may not represent every condition on the project.

Containment & dust management

Plan the work area
before blasting begins.

Blasting generates airborne dust, spent media, and removed material. Site-specific controls and responsibilities should be established with the project team before mobilization.

Protect Adjacent Areas

Review containment, openings, ventilation and dust collection, sensitive equipment, occupied areas, and adjacent trades. The process should not be described as dust-free.

Define Cleanup & Turnover

Agree on media recovery, residue removal, waste handling, and cleanup responsibilities. Follow-on finishes may require additional cleaning or checks for compatibility with the selected media.

Project process

Review. Test. Coordinate. Prepare.

01 / REVIEW

Define the surface scope.

Review plans, photos, affected areas, substrate condition, and the restoration requirements.

02 / TEST

Confirm the approach.

Use a representative test area when media selection, cleaning response, or appearance needs verification.

03 / COORDINATE

Plan the jobsite.

Confirm access, containment, work windows, adjacent trades, and cleanup responsibilities.

04 / PREPARE

Complete the agreed scope.

Clean the approved surfaces and coordinate turnover to the restoration team.

Practical project questions

Set the right expectations.

Is soda blasting always the right method?

No. Soda, another selected media, or a different cleaning method may be appropriate depending on the substrate, contamination, finish, and project requirements.

Can blasting remove all char or discoloration?

Results depend on the depth of damage and the material. Deep char or absorbed discoloration may remain, and further removal may alter the wood. Evaluate retained surfaces and agree on an acceptable result before production.

Does clean-looking wood mean it is structurally sound?

No. Surface cleaning and structural evaluation serve different purposes. The responsible project professional determines whether damaged members can remain or require repair or replacement.

Can the surface receive a coating afterward?

Coordinate the intended system with the coating or treatment provider. Media residue, moisture, texture, and cleanliness requirements must be addressed before that trade applies its system.
