Prepare for what comes next

A defined surface.
A coordinated scope.

Commercial abrasive blasting removes selected coatings, corrosion, and surface materials to prepare suitable substrates for their next finish or treatment. Often searched for as commercial sandblasting, the process uses media and equipment selected for the work—not a single approach applied to every surface.

For the contractor

Share the coating or finish specification, areas of work, and construction sequence. PDB reviews the preparation scope alongside access, adjacent trades, and the condition of the existing surface so responsibilities are clear before mobilization.

For the facility team

Identify occupied areas, operating equipment, sensitive finishes, and available work windows. We discuss isolation, protection, and access needs to determine a practical approach for the site.

Commercial applications

From renovation
to protective coatings.

Coating removal & recoating

Remove existing paint and suitable coatings from steel, concrete, and masonry. Define the removal extent and required surface condition with the painting or coating contractor before production.

Construction & tenant improvements

Prepare exposed steel, concrete, and masonry during building improvements and renovation. Coordinate blasting with demolition, access equipment, protection, and follow-on trades.

Concrete preparation & finishes

Remove surface materials and prepare suitable concrete for coatings, overlays, or an architectural finish. The specified profile and slab condition guide method selection; shot blasting or another preparation process may better suit a particular floor.

Facility maintenance & restoration

Address deteriorated coatings, corrosion, and surface buildup on suitable commercial building components. Phase the work around maintenance access, work windows, and restoration objectives.

Suitable substrates

Match the process
to the surface.

Concrete

Walls, slabs, and other concrete surfaces with sufficient integrity for the proposed preparation. Existing sealers, coatings, repairs, and the required finish help determine the approach.

Structural steel

Beams, columns, and fabricated components requiring rust, scale, or coating removal. The coating specification should establish the required cleanliness and surface profile.

Brick & masonry

Suitable brick, CMU, and masonry requiring coating or buildup removal. Unit condition, mortar joints, and sensitivity to surface loss are reviewed before selecting media and pressure.

Test the approach where the finish matters.

A representative test area can help establish appearance and method suitability on sensitive, previously treated, or unfamiliar surfaces. Existing damage, embedded staining, and substrate variation can affect the result.

Before mobilization

Plan the work
around the jobsite.

Scope & specification

  • Surface material, area, and existing coating condition.
  • Required cleanliness, profile, or architectural appearance.
  • Test-area approval and inspection responsibilities where applicable.

Access & sequencing

  • Truck staging, hose routes, work height, and lift or scaffold access.
  • Occupied spaces, adjacent trades, and available work windows.
  • Coordination with coating application and other follow-on work.

Protection & containment

  • Adjacent finishes, equipment, openings, and sensitive areas.
  • Dust, media, ventilation, and containment needs for the selected process.
  • Known coating hazards and any required testing or handling provisions.

Cleanup & project requirements

  • Collection, hauling, and disposal responsibilities defined in the proposal.
  • Site access procedures, documentation, and schedule requirements.
  • Prevailing wage and certified payroll requirements on applicable public works.

Common project questions

Know what to send.
Know what to expect.

Is abrasive blasting the same as sandblasting?

Sandblasting is a common search term for abrasive blasting. The media used for a project is selected for the substrate, coating, and required finish; the name does not mean ordinary sand is the appropriate media.

Can PDB work at an occupied commercial property?

Suitability depends on the site and scope. Share occupancy, ventilation, equipment, and work-window constraints early. A site review may be needed to determine whether blasting and the necessary protection can be accommodated.

What does PDB need to prepare an estimate?

Send the project location, surface type, approximate square footage, existing coating, desired finish, and schedule. Plans, close-up photos, overall site photos, and access details help us assess the scope; some projects also require a site walk or test area.

Built around your scope

A clear plan before
production begins.

01 / REVIEW

Send the project details.

Share your project type, location, surface material, approximate square footage, existing coating, and desired schedule. Photos and plans help us assess the work.

02 / PLAN

Define the approach.

We review access, surface condition, required finish, and containment needs. Where needed, a site walk or test area helps establish the scope.

03 / COORDINATE

Prepare for the jobsite.

Align the blasting work with your project schedule and site requirements, with preparation, protection, and cleanup responsibilities defined in the proposal.
