Prepare for the next system

Give the next trade a prepared surface.

Shot blasting removes a controlled amount of surface material to create texture for a compatible coating or bonded system. PDB Inc. is a licensed commercial and industrial abrasive blasting and surface-preparation contractor. We evaluate the existing floor and project requirements before recommending a method.

01 / PROFILE

Controlled surface texture

Prepare suitable concrete to the profile required by the specified coating, overlay, or flooring system.

02 / PREPARE

Remove suitable surface material

Address weak surface paste and certain light coatings, curing compounds, sealers, or surface contamination where the process is appropriate.

03 / COORDINATE

Plan productive floor preparation

Organize work across accessible horizontal areas, with media recovery, dust collection, and turnover to the follow-on trade.

Commercial & industrial applications

Built around working floors.

Warehouses & Manufacturing

Concrete floor preparation for production areas, equipment zones, storage facilities, and industrial maintenance or renovation.

Parking Structures

Prepare suitable decks and horizontal concrete for specified traffic coatings, restoration, or compatible protective systems.

Commercial Interiors

Prepare existing floors during tenant improvements, adaptive reuse, and contractor-led renovations before the next flooring system.

Institutional & Public Works

Preparation for school, municipal, and public-agency facilities, coordinated with project-specific access, documentation, and scheduling requirements.

Surface profile matters

Start with the required CSP.

Concrete Surface Profile (CSP) describes the texture of the prepared concrete. The coating or flooring manufacturer and project specification should establish the required profile. A thin coating and a thicker overlay may need different preparation.

Match the preparation to the system

PDB reviews the intended finish, specified CSP, substrate hardness, existing coating, and floor condition. Media, equipment settings, travel speed, and the concrete itself influence the result.

Confirm the result when needed

A representative test area can help verify coating behavior, achievable profile, and appearance. We do not assume one CSP can be delivered on every surface without evaluation.

PDB prepares the substrate for the next trade. Flooring, coating, overlay, and repair-system installation are separate scopes.

Understand the process

Enclosed Shot Blasting for Controlled Surface Preparation

Mechanical shot blasting uses a rotating wheel to propel metallic shot against the floor. The enclosed unit recovers reusable media while a connected collection system removes dust and debris.

Shot blasting is a form of abrasive blasting used for concrete floor profiling. On suitable floors, it can create a controlled concrete surface profile (CSP) for preparation before epoxy, urethane, resinous flooring, coatings, overlays, sealers, adhesives, and similar systems.

The required profile depends on the flooring or coating manufacturer’s specifications, project requirements, and existing substrate condition. Shot blasting is not appropriate for every surface; grinding or another preparation method may be a better fit.

Enclosed mechanical shot blasting differs from open-nozzle abrasive blasting, which may be more appropriate for vertical concrete, structural steel, masonry, and irregular surfaces.

Select the method

A good fit starts with the floor.

When shot blasting may fit

Sound, accessible horizontal concrete requiring mechanical profiling before coatings or overlays. It can also remove weak surface material and suitable thin treatments, depending on their thickness, adhesion, and composition.

When another method may be better

Thick or flexible coatings, deeply absorbed contamination, restricted access, uneven surfaces, and delicate finish requirements may call for grinding, nozzle abrasive blasting, separate treatment, or a combination of methods.

Review Paint & Coating Removal ↗

Before mobilization

Include the whole preparation scope.

Dust Collection & Occupied Areas

Commercial equipment is typically connected to industrial dust collection to help control airborne dust and recover debris. The process is not completely dust-free. Review containment, ventilation, sensitive areas, and adjacent trades.

Edges, Corners & Obstructions

Walk-behind equipment cannot always reach walls, columns, corners, equipment pads, or penetrations. Define complementary edge and detail preparation, including grinding where appropriate.

Existing Floor Conditions

Review coating type, contaminants, weak or damaged concrete, moisture-related conditions, repairs, and joints. Known hazards or coating-testing information should be shared before planning removal.

Access & Production

Confirm equipment routes, floor levels, power, work windows, noise restrictions, sequencing, cleanup responsibilities, and the condition required for turnover.

Built for project teams

Coordinate preparation with the trades that follow.

PDB works with general contractors, flooring and coating contractors, facility and property managers, industrial clients, municipalities, and public agencies. We align the preparation scope with the specified system and project schedule.

01 / REVIEW

Define the floor.

Review plans, photos, quantities, existing coatings, and the proposed final system.

02 / CONFIRM

Select the approach.

Establish the preparation method and assess whether a test area is needed.

03 / COORDINATE

Plan the work.

Confirm access, edges, containment, production windows, and responsibilities.

04 / PREPARE

Complete the scope.

Prepare the approved areas and coordinate turnover to the follow-on trade.

Bay Area shot blasting

Local projects. Commercial requirements.

PDB serves commercial and industrial projects in Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento, Alameda County, Contra Costa County, Santa Clara County, and Solano County. From warehouse floor preparation in Oakland to coating preparation in San Jose, we evaluate scopes throughout the Bay Area and surrounding Northern California markets.
