Masonry coating removal and surface assessment
Masonry blasting & coating removal
Plan the removal around the wall.
Looking for a masonry sandblasting contractor in the Bay Area? PDB evaluates the coating, masonry face and mortar joints before choosing an abrasive blasting method. The goal may be exposed masonry, a cleaner surface, or preparation for a new coating. Each requires a clearly defined finish.
Brick Paint Removal
Remove compatible coatings from suitable interior and exterior brick. Review multiple paint layers, existing damage, repairs and mortar condition before establishing the scope.
CMU & Block Cleaning
Prepare compatible concrete masonry units for recoating or an exposed finish. Surface texture and porosity affect how coatings release and what remains visible.
Graffiti & Surface Buildup
Evaluate localized paint and surface deposits with a test area. Some stains penetrate the masonry and may remain after surface cleaning.
Commercial renovation scopes
Interior brick. Exterior walls. Defined work areas.
We coordinate with general contractors, painting contractors, restoration teams and facility managers on commercial sandblasting and masonry preparation projects.
Exposed Interior Masonry
Plan walls, columns, lobby areas and retained finishes around the renovation sequence. Review access, adjacent trades, openings and the required appearance.
Exterior Masonry Preparation
Coordinate lifts or scaffolding, landscaping, windows, nearby vehicles, pedestrian routes and the ground beneath the work. Define masking and collection limits before production.
Paint & Coating Removal
Agree on the removal standard and any coating residue that may remain in pores or recesses. Where recoating is planned, align preparation with the coating manufacturer’s requirements.
Restoration Coordination
Identify loose mortar, spalled faces, weak units and earlier blasting damage. Masonry repair, repointing and rebuilding are separate scopes to coordinate with the responsible trade.
Test before full production
Confirm the finish on representative masonry.
Brick and mortar vary in hardness and condition. A representative mockup helps establish the media, pressure, working distance and acceptable surface change before a larger area is treated.
Assess Suitability
Soft, historic, glazed or previously damaged masonry can be unsuitable for abrasive cleaning. Where testing shows damage or unacceptable change, review a different cleaning method with the project team.
Approve a Clear Reference
Review coating removal, texture, color variation, mortar response and edge conditions. Different walls, repairs and coatings may need separate test areas.
Containment & turnover
Account for dust, debris and adjacent surfaces.
Abrasive blasting produces spent media and removed coating debris. Indoor work may require containment and dust collection; exterior work needs protection beyond the wall itself. Wet methods also require planning for water and residue.
Define the Work Zone
Review occupied areas, ventilation, sensitive equipment, glazing, drains and access routes. Identify existing coating hazards before selecting the work method.
Agree on Cleanup
Set responsibilities for collection, hauling, disposal and final turnover in the proposal. Include the ground or floors below elevated work where media can fall.
